“Shaped by girls only“ – that’s the motto of the Funmountain Obergurgl – this means that all of the mountain’s facilities are in the firm hands of women. They’re maintained by a 6-headed shape crew led by park designer Francine Boer and head-shaperess Lana Behla. The girls call themselves Diamond Girls Crew. Lana was kind enough to give us a little insight about her job.
What do you like best about the outdoor office?
Lana: Well, you’re always working outside in the fresh air, and you have to move a lot. So there’s certainly no need to go to the gym. Basically, you’re working out all day long at your personal “gym in the mountains”, so to speak. Since the four facilities are spread around the entire ski resort, we’re constantly riding around on our snowboards. While other people have to pay for that, for us it’s just part of our job.
Let’s talk about the four facilities – what’s the greatest challenge when it comes to the maintenance?
Lana: It’s quite a challenge to coordinate the crew, so that everything works out perfectly. The timing has to be right – for example, when you close one of the facilities at 4 pm, you can’t get another one. The cooperation is also an important aspect – not just internally among the crew, but with everybody who works at the resort. The lift attendants, for example, let us take a ride into the mountains in the morning, so that we arrive at the parks on time. In the evening we contact staff members who operate the snow groomers and ask if anybody is doing their rounds with the winch and if it’s safe to ride down to the valley. All this works out very smoothly and the vibe is just amazing – we’re like a big family. Everybody’s a part, from the baker where we get our breakfast in the morning to attendants at the draglift.
