Ski World Cup Gurgl as a green pilot project in ski sports

The topics of sustainability and regionality are very important to us locals here in Ötztal. We live and love winter and our nature, which is exactly why we want to set the best example in ski sports. As a partner of Green Event Austria, we would like to gather experience and subsequently provide best practice examples and suggestions also for other organizers. Because sustainability is also possible in skiing. You can read about the specific measures we are implementing at the Gurgl Ski World Cup here.

Mobility

Public transport by train and bus or carpooling is strongly recommended

The public bus runs through Ötztal every 30 minutes

Shuttles for visitors to the event area so that the car can stay at the accommodation as well as shuttles from public bus stops to the event

Event & press team travels by train/bus or carpooling

Tip: Use the Ummadum app and track your sustainable journey! It is important that you are part of the Ski World Cup Gurgl Community.

Resources

Heat supply for Top Mountain Crosspoint in the finish area with biomass and 100% renewable electricity from Austria

Hochgurglbahn gondola is powered by 100% green electricity

ORF broadcast vans & sales stands are powered by 100% renewable electricity

No diesel generators are used

Digital first: we make sure to use as little paper as possible and work mainly with QR codes and links

Regional
foods

Mainly regional ingredients from local producers

For example, local Ötztal fish (Ötztaler Quellfisch)

For example, Tirolean beef or veal (Almrind or Jahrling)

For example, other meat products from local butchers

Offering vegan & vegetarian dishes in all areas (event area, VIP zones, Gurgl Carat, ...)

Waste

Avoiding waste by using reusable containers and cups

Waste separation taking into account the regional waste system in the spectator & backstage areas

Cup deposit system in order to motivate visitors to return the cups

Our
partners

Pulling together – also our partners take care of the environment with us:

One of Austria’s most environmental-friendly sporting event

Skiworldcup Gurgl 2023

The green pilot project in alpine ski racing was a complete success and has now even been awarded a prize. In the Austria-wide competition "Win Sustainably!", the Gurgl Ski World Cup was chosen as the winner in the "Sports Events" category among 127 events. The 2023 slalom in Gurgl was the first Ski World Cup race in Austria to take place under the Green Events Austria label. The main intention was to gather experience in Ötztal and thus provide inspiration for other World Cup venues. Now the joy is all the greater of being honored already for the first edition. In 2024, the overall measures will be fine-tuned and further expanded.

"Initially, we had great respect for holding the World Cup as a green event. Thanks to our optimal valley-wide infrastructure, the effort was still manageable. The current award confirms the effort and work of everyone involved as well as the path we have taken." Alban Scheiber
