Sober directions can never capture the intense nature impressions on site, the high recreational value of winter hiking in Gurgl. Nevertheless, a few winter hiking tour tips that should arouse the desire to come and discover the trails for yourself:
The classic tour of every Gurgl holiday is a leisurely stroll on the valley floor of Pill/Angern (starting point: parking area of Hochgurgl Gondola base station) along Gurgler Ache mountain brook to Obergurgl and quaint Zirben Alm. With every step you will discover new perspectives of the village and its majestic environs.
The nature trail through the Stone Pine Forest (Zirbenwald) leads from Obergurgl past Zirben Alm to the Zirbenwald crossroads. Centuries-old trees are witness to the ongoing battle against the caprices of nature. You return towards Zirbenwald bridge keeping left, descending to Imfong Weg (walking time: approx. 1 hour).
Lovely Schönwieshütte (2270 m) is about 1.5 hours' walk above Obergurgl at the foot of Hangerer face. A broad farm road leads from the base station of Hohe Mut Gondola 1 past the 400 year old stone pine forest up to the privately run hut (opening times: 9.00 am – 4.00 pm, please check notice board for closing day).
The 1 km long Hochgurgl romantic trail runs relatively flat above Hochgurgl’s chapel in a scenic loop above the tree line towards picture-book Königstal. Holding hands is an absolute must as a part of the winter hiking trail is illuminated!
